The Fort Mill Neighborhood

Fort Mill inherited its name from its location between – can you guess? – a fort and a mill. The fort was constructed by the British to protect the Catawba Indians, and the mill next door was called Webb’s Mill.

Fort Mill grew a lot in the 19th century when textile mills were added to the area. The Springs Family was a major part of development in this area. You could say they were some of the original founders of the town, and they had a major part in capitalizing on cotton and textiles in the area.

Then, when the cotton and textile industry went overseas in the ’80s, and ’90s, the Springs started diversifying into real estate, including some of the nicer real estate projects in the area. Some of these include Baxter Village (higher-end residential retail), Kingsley Park (higher-end retail office development), and Springfield (one of the nicer neighborhoods in Fort Mill, complete with its own public golf course).

Although the textile transition caused a pivot point for the Springs family, the many residents of Fort Mill have benefited greatly from their real estate investments and developments around town.
