NoDa used to be a textile community. It began development in 1903 and became a popular place for blue collar workers due to the many textile mills nearby. However, by the 1970s, all of the mills were sold, and the population of NoDa started to decline.

This resilient area made a comeback in the 1990s, when it began developing into the eclectic, artistic neighborhood that it is today. The new life that was brought to this area of Charlotte continues to grow and evolve as more people choose the unique and diverse culture that NoDa offers when choosing their NC home.

Recent developments include retail properties as well as apartment complexes. The light rail, which runs through the city, is a unique benefit to the residents of NoDa. It runs from the university city area by UNCC all the way down to Pineville on the border of South Carolina. The old rail yard in NoDa is a sizable part of the city, and transformations are coming. What used to be a big legacy rail yard many years ago has now been replaced with other forms of transportation. While the rail yard is no longer in use, it’s taking up a lot of space that could be used as valuable real estate. As the property in NoDa has become more valuable, people are realizing that there are better ways to use this potentially high quality area.

In the last few years, there was talk about using the space around the rail yard for a 220-acre park, somewhat inspired by New York City’s Central Park. This would offer more green space and recreation opportunities in the city. Now, folks are pushing for a new plan, to put a 37-acre park between 36th Street and Matheson Avenue instead.

While the final decision isn’t yet clear, what is clear is that continued change and innovation are coming in the NoDa neighborhood.

Another newer development is the open-air, purple and yellow passenger train car that recently was placed along the railway. The Aberdeen Carolina & Western Railway Company (ACWR) has plans to use this car as a trendy social space.
